The National Wildlife Refuge System has no equal when it comes to conserving our nation's rich wildlife heritage. The over 550 refuges are home to more than 700 bird species, 220 mammal species, 250 reptile and amphibian species, and over 200 species of fish. Such a diverse array of wildlife means that the Refuge System contains both rare and common types of habitat -- everything from southwest desert to arctic tundra.

For 40 million visitors each year, refuges provide a welcome retreat to natural surroundings. That's why we are pleased to host this digital photography contest devoted to our national wildlife refuges.

You can submit your National Wildlife Refuge System images on this site beginning August 14, 2010. There is a $10 entry fee per photographer.

Images must be taken on national wildlife refuges and can feature birds, mammals, insects, fish, other animals, plants, people, or refuge scenery. In short, we welcome images of almost any sight taken at a national wildlife refuge.

Entries for the 2010 Contest must be submitted by September 24, 2010. Results will be announced in October 2010 in connection with Refuge Week.

Results of the contest will be prominently featured on our website. Selected photos will be added to NWRA's digital Refuge Image Library, an online searchable gallery of images taken at national wildlife refuges hosted by Zenfolio. Prizes include $2,000 and two round trip plane tickets on Southwest, NWRA's official airline, and other great products generously provided by our sponsors below. In addition, all photographers submitting an entry will receive a complimentary one year membership in the National Wildlife Refuge Association (NWRA), the only organization working exclusively to protect, enhance and expand the National Wildlife Refuge System. See the Contest Prize Page for more information on these and the additional prizes offered by our contest partners.

Winning entries will be selected by two rounds of judging. The first round will select at least 100 images to be included in the NWRA Refuge Image Library. The second round will result in the selection of the top prize winners.

See the Contest Rules and Procedures for more information.
